Area
IV Assembly Council holds summer meeting in Indianapolis
By:
John J. Wernert, M.D.
IPS Representative to APA Assembly
Indianapolis
was the host city for the Area IV Council summer meeting held
July 31 - August 1, 2004, at the new Mariott Hotel. IPS was
pleased to host 40 of our psychiatric colleagues from the
Midwest for two days of meetings and strategic planning. We
were particularly happy to have Dr. Jay Scully, APA medical
Director in attendance. Also attending from the central office
were Jason Pray, director of APAPAC and Mr. Nick Meyers, Director
of the Division of Government Relations for the APA.
Saturday,
July 31st began with a meeting of the IPS Council. The 2004-2005
program was set and funding options reviewed. Dr. Rauscher
provided a financial report and the council considered the
consultant's report concerning retained earnings and unrelated
business income. The Area IV Council hosted a joint lunch,
and during this opening session, Dr. Alan Schmetzer received
the venerable Sagamore of the Wabash award. Dr. Hugh Hendrie,
former chair of the I.U. Department of Psychiatry, and Dr.
Jay Scully, APA Medical Director, presented this esteemed
award. Also in attendance were Alan's wife, Janet, and IPS
Council members and Residents. (See pictures sent earlier).
The Area IV Council then met for 4 hours and discussed current
and future challenges facing our professional organization.
At 5:30
PM, the APAPAC hosted a fund-raiser and reception for Congressman
Steve Buyer (R-IN/4) and his wife at the St. Elmo's Restaurant
in downtown Indianapolis. 35 psychiatrists and local physician
leaders were in attendance including representation for the
Indiana Medical Association, Emergency Physicians, Pathologist
Association and the Dental Association. After the reception,
a dinner was hosted by Dr. Chris Bojrab, IPS President, for
the Area IV Council. The camaraderie continued until the restaurant
closed that evening.
The Area
IV Meeting concluded on Sunday August 1 with a breakfast and
three-hour meeting. All in attendance agreed it was one of
the finest and most productive meeting in Area IV memory.
IPS was heartily praised for stellar planning and hospitality.
